Hiking Retreats

The French Alps are nothing less than a hiker’s paradise. The French Alps offer a plethora of hiking experiences, ranging from easy ambles to demanding expeditions. So be honest with yourself about your skill level. Known for their dramatic landscapes, the Alps boast a captivating mix of towering snow-capped peaks, verdant valleys, and picturesque villages that seem to be plucked straight from a fairy tale.

Beyond the scenery, the trails of the French Alps offer a touchstone with nature that revitalizes the spirit and a chance to immerse oneself in a rich tapestry of culture and history. Whether you’re indulging in local Savoyard cheese in a quaint chalet or stumbling upon a rustic chapel on a hidden trail, every step in the Alps brings a new discovery.

Time of Year: The best time to hike the French Alps is from late spring to early autumn (May to October). During this period, trails are accessible, and weather conditions are favourable, normally.

Local Weather: Mountain weather can be unpredictable. Check the forecast regularly and be prepared for sudden changes.

Cycling Retreats

With the French Alps stretching for around 300km, there are lots of mountains to climb, as well as multiple international gateways to get to them.

The French Alps have some of the most famous climbs in the world. The likes of Alpe d’Huez and the Col du Galibier rank among the more storied in Tour de France history and attract cyclists from across the globe each year. There are plenty more places that never see the Tour, however, but are equally worthy of your pedalling power.

The Haute-Savoie will be the host region of the 2027 UCI Cycling World Championships – ie, one of the new super champs featuring almost every cycling discipline, Haute-Savoie sits on the Italian and Swiss borders and is home to natural wonders including Lake Annecy, Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc.

In 2022, the Tour de France stopped off in Haute-Savoie on two consecutive days. From Aigle to Châtel and it came back for 2025.
